Zinc Hydroxystannate (ZHS) is one of the important chemical substances. Being a flame retardant synergist, it simultaneously represses the formation of smoke preventing the surface spread of flame.
 Focusing on the mode of action, ZHS works by two mechanisms that help in extinguishing flames generated in the gas phase. Due to its dual functionality it shows an advantage over antimony trioxide that has good action against the flame, but does not show any activity against smoke. It has a feature to get dehydrated at 180 ºC and extracting heat from the flame zone by releasing water vapour.
ZHS does not cause any health problem to human and is environment friendly also. Its use has been increasing due to its “antimony-free applications” mainly in the electronics industry. Thus, due to its distinct characteristics it has been used in PVC systems for cable sheathing, epoxy resins required for printed circuit boards, polyamides and surface coatings as ZHS is effective in halogen free and halogen containing systems.

Properties:
It has been proved as an excellent flame retardant with smoke suppression properties. These properties can be demonstrated in materials like:
  • PVC (Rigid and Flexible)
  • FRLS Cable compound
  • Polyester resins
  • Alkyd Resin-based paints
  • Polychloropene (Neoprene)
  • Chlorosulphoned Polyethylene (Hypalon)
  • Polyamide (Nylon 6 and Nylon 66)
  • Epoxy resins
  • Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Co-Polymer
  • EVA, HFFR cable compound

Applications of ZHS:
  • It can replace Molybdenum Trioxide in PVC FRLS cable compound
  • Initially used for halogen containing polymer formulation including PVC for wires and cables
  • It easily provides Oxygen Index along with Smoke suppressant properties
  • If Antimony Trioxide is added, it gives oxygen index but the amount of smoke increases. While in addition of ZHS it offer oxygen index as well as work as smoke suppressant

Packing of ZHS:
The chemical compound is packed in 25 kg multiwall paper bags in 40 bags per pallet. Each one of the pallet is stretch wrapped in polyethylene so that shifting of the product can be prevented during transportation.
